ST. IGNATIUS — Fort Connah held their second Black Powder Range Day of the season on April 12.

Ed Larson was out teaching the art of muzzleloader shooting at the event. He said, basically, that you have a bullet and a patch of cloth and black powder and you put that in the barrel of the gun and shoot it out.

“You have a 50-caliber barrel with a 490 ball with a cloth patch that gets in between to seal the ball with the 60 grams of powder down below propelling the ball,” he said.

The range was set up at the black powder and primitive archery range located at the fort.

Members of the Fort Connah board participated in the shoot and provided information.

Myles Dauterive and his wife Jessica Dauterive were at the event. “We figured this range day would be a good way to get people to come out and see the fort,” Myels said.

Additional range days will be held on April 26 and May 10.

Event coordinators are planning a competition shoot with multiple different events. Myles described a past event: “We did a turkey shoot. You had to split a string with your ball. The next event was hitting two targets with one ball. Lastly, you had to shoot out a candle without hitting the candle at all.”

“We have been working on getting the fort open for 50 years,” Myles said, “but we are getting close. We welcome the public to any of our events as well as private tours to any school.”
