HELENA — The Foundation for Montana History is pleased to announce the release of “Henry Sieben: A Montana Story,” a new biography by author Ciara Ryan.
Henry Sieben (1848–1937) came to Montana in 1864 with John Bozeman’s first wagon train. Just seventeen years old and recently orphaned, he had hopes of striking it rich in Montana’s gold fields. What followed was a life that mirrored the dramatic growth of the territory itself — from freighting and open range to ranching and family businesses, Henry Sieben participated in all the major economic and social developments of Montana. Drawing from newly available original sources, Ryan presents Sieben not just as a successful rancher and businessman, but as a key historical figure whose remarkable life illuminates our understanding of Montana’s past.
“Henry’s untold story expands our understanding of Montana’s history,” author Ciara Ryan said. “He arrived in the territory a young immigrant, and his simple values of hard work and family helped shape this state’s trajectory and built an agricultural legacy that continues today.”
Henry Sieben: A Montana Story is available now for $24.95 at local bookstores across Montana and online through Farcountry Press.
Ciara Ryan, originally from Limerick, Ireland, first came to Montana as a Fulbright Scholar in 2010. She earned her PhD from University College Cork and has since published widely on Irish language and history in Montana. Ryan currently teaches Irish at Harvard University and lives in Helena.
