Thanksgiving was the theme for our last meeting. A family tradition of one member was the expressing of thanks by each person before partaking of the meal. My particular “tradition” is preparing an excessive amount of food. Among the fare at my table this year was an organic turkey, ham, potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, five side dishes, plus salads, relishes and desserts … and yes, accompanied by a glass of wine. One member was asked to share a nontraditional, “non-cookie-cutter” thing she was thankful for. What would that be for you? A tough question, because we all truly have many blessings, small and large. Our guest from Kazakhstan (formerly part of the Soviet Union) shared that there is not an official Thanksgiving holiday there. Yes, parades and activities for a particular occasion, but food is not a part of the festivities. Our newest member from Canada enjoys two Thanksgiving celebrations.
The meeting speaker is working toward the Advanced Communicator Gold Award. She gave an oratorical presentation of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The heart of the speech still rings true for many because, sadly, racial prejudice still exists.
On a lighter note, the grammarian provided a word that I encourage everyone to adopt and use frequently. Copacetic, which means, “very satisfactory.” How was your day? Copacetic. How is your health? Copacetic. Yes, let us focus on what is not only satisfactory in our days but what is very satisfactory.
Due to the holidays, All-Ways Talking Toastmasters will meet only once in December. The meeting will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Ronan Tribal Senior Center building just east of the stoplight intersection of Round Butte and Terrace Lake Roads, across 93 from the Dairy Queen. Coffee, herbal teas and treats will be served. The public is welcome.
Extending wishes for a warm, wonderful, Christmas full of love and blessings for the new year.
