Editor,

My arrival in Barcelona, Spain, on Dec. 2 was uneventful. Aside from being totally baffled in Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris, possibly the world’s most confusing layout, even the nine hours sitting in cramped economy class went reasonably well. The screaming baby was blocked out with earplugs, and the very chatty lady next to me took the hint. Come prepared, I say.

And crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 2012 was such an improvement over 1955, when I crossed on the heaving and rolling USS Buckner troop ship on my way to Bremerhaven, Germany. What a difference 57 years can make. But I digress.

Before leaving Polson, Nancy Teggeman showed me a letter to the editor she was submitting to the Valley Journal, that premier publication in our area. It was a dandy. Well-written with a most important message. We should all read it.

Nancy wrote about her trip to Africa in August. Africa, that large and somewhat mysterious land for which most of us have little knowledge but many judgments and misunderstandings. Nancy’s experiences and observations bring out facts and trends totally ignored in the world’s media frenzy focusing upon political upheaval, killing, rape and mass displacement of people. There is another power emerging in this world, even if it is not talked about very much.

This line in Nancy’s letter spoke volumes to the point of her letter: “We experienced culture shock, not on our arrival in Africa, but on our arrival back home.” Read her letter. It probably has been printed already. The wisdom and insights in her letter, in my opinion, are very timely and vital to solving the political, economic and social impasse infecting America today.

There is a healing power emerging in this world today, but it cannot grow and flourish without each of us being willing to at least look at our own attitudes, actions and mindsets which feed this impasse. The hope of the world resides within each of us.
