Editor,

We in Lake County live in one of the most beautiful places in Montana. And it’s unfortunate that we have a group of Republican legislators who have some of the worst environmental voting records in the state. Of 18 anti-environmental bills that made it to a final vote in the 2011 legislative session, Rep. Janna Taylor voted for all of them; Rep. Read voted for all of them; and Rep. Solomon, 15 of them. Among them were bills to weaken our constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment (HB292) and to repeal renewable energy and conservation credits (SB253). Fortunately, with the veto help of Gov. Schweitzer and a handful of open-minded Republicans, many of these 18 anti-environmental bills never made it into law. But that was just a part of the show. Then there were Republican bills to declare that global warming is good for Montana (Rep. Read - HB549), allow guns in schools (HB558), require compulsory marriage counseling for couples seeking a divorce (HB438), create fully armed militia in every town (HB278). The list goes on and on. Much of this might be amusing, except for the fact that it’s our taxpayer money that was being squandered on such foolishness.

This fall, Lake County voters have an opportunity to bring some balance to the environmental and social issues. Take a look at Nancy Lindsey in Senate District 6, Luke Walawander in House District 12, Roderick Broston in HD 11 and Frosty Calf Boss Ribs in HD 15.  These are folks committed to moving communities forward through open dialogue and non-confrontational politics. It’s time for a change — what say ye?
