Editor,
It is quite obvious that our politicians cannot differentiate between necessities and non-necessities. A monthly Social Security check is a non-necessity for a retired politician and a large number of upper income citizens. That check is a necessity for the majority of average citizens.
Any and all actions that subtract from or delay receipt of those checks are tantamount to an income tax increase on those least able to pay. Likewise on the Medicare program.
Being active in senior activities and groups has opened my eyes to needs that are not being met regarding health issues affecting too many seniors. Their lives are being shortened because they lack the money to pay for exams and treatments. They are considered not poor enough to receive free care and many are too proud to ask for it.
I am among those fortunate enough to afford supplemental health coverage, even though I might qualify for veteran’s health benefits. I feel the VA hospitals have enough of a work load with current Iraq and Afghanistan vets without me taking up their valuable time.
There always has and always will be those who are abusers. Some are lazy who milk the system. Others who own businesses rip off the government in various (legal) ways. That does not mean that we should abandon those with legitimate needs.
