CHARLO — Four people were injured in a hit-and-run in front of a Charlo tavern at about 1:53 a.m. early Sunday morning. A black Ford pickup struck the individuals and then fled the area.

The pickup, driven by Jared Hendrickson, 21, Arlee, was located in the North Valley Creek area about an hour after the incident. Tribal Law Enforcement Chief Craige Couture credited Sgt. Ed Dumont with figuring out which roads Hendrickson would take and deploying officers to find him.

Hendrickson and his 20-year-old passenger Alexandria Trejo-Courchane were arrested. Trejo-Courchane was cited for Minor in Possession and later released. Hendrickson is currently being held without bail in the Lake County Jail pending arraignment for criminal endangerment.

The four people, whose names have not been released, were transported to the hospital. One person suffered broken leg bones, but the others were treated and released

Lake County Undersheriff Dan Yonkin said a band was playing outside a Charlo tavern. The crowd had spilled into the street, but the injured folks were not in the middle of the street, Yonkin said.

Yonkin said recent legislative changes make it a mandatory felony to leave the scene of an accident involving a death or serious bodily injury, with penalties ranging from a minimum of one year to a maximum of 10 years in prison.

“I like to call it the Jami Sherman law,” Yonkin said, because Sherman’s parents lobbied for stiffer penalties for hit-and-run crimes after Jami was killed by hit-and-run driver Ed Ness on July 1, 2006.
