Individual voter fraud a small problem

Editor,

Carmine Mowbray worries about individual voter fraud and proposes requiring a photo ID for all voters. This has two very serious problems. Firstly, it would be a major step preparing the way for a national ID. Most of us don’t want that, and I for one would refuse to carry it.

The other problem with the photo ID requirement is that individual voter fraud is so rare as to be essentially nonexistent. Ballot boxes have been stuffed and voting machines hacked, but those are crimes committed by politicians and ward bosses.

The Senator should provide even a few examples of individuals trying to vote twice or in two or more places.

The last Montana Legislature voted to place such an ID requirement on the next general election ballot. The only logical motivation for such a requirement is to reduce the number of people who vote — not an honorable motive.
