Passing generation reminded of hope

Most of the living members of my Polson High School graduating class of 1951 have celebrated their 80th birthday; we’ve become the “passing generation.” Attending memorials and graveside ceremonies for old friends has become more and more frequent with each passing year.
With these experiences in mind, my thoughts often turn to some familiar lines of scripture that provide some comfort to those who have lost their dearest family member.
“And now dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died … the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14; 16c-18 NLT). Not everyone will find comfort or encouragement in those words, but “believers” will.
The Garden Tomb is forever empty; Jesus is alive. In a few short weeks all Christendom will once again joyfully celebrate history’s most marvelous miracle, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who said, “since I live, you also will live” (John 14:19b NLT).
