DAYTON — If you miss something in the Dayton Daze parade, it’s okay, because it’s a tradition for parade entries to circle the small town twice.
Children polled along the parade route said Dayton Daze has the best candy, “not so many root beer barrels.”
The Chief Cliff Fire Service Area sponsored Dayton Daze as it celebrated its 20th anniversary on Sept. 10 with the parade at 3 p.m. honoring 9/11. Parade flagbearers were Mikayla and Matthew Meuli riding double on their horse Colonel and accompanied by Sigurd and Kelly Jensen representing Chief Cliff Quarter Horses. Driven by Kurt Van Voast in his limousine, Barb Amestoy was Grand Marshall. Following her in the Polson Elkmobile were Alice Gager and Patty Ferdinand.
Gager said she was one of the organizers for the first Dayton Daze. She also served as the first Grand Marshall of the parade and for many other years as well.
A whole trailer load of Dayton school children, many wearing shirts featuring their mascot, the War Pig, rode in the parade.
In addition to the parade, free sailboat rides were offered at Dayton Yacht Harbor and the Dayton Church held a bazaar and offered lunch. After the parade at 4:30 p.m. live music played at the Idle Spur and continued until closing. A pig roast dinner was also held at the Idle Spur, and the saloon offered free camping.
The fire department raffled off $300 and $200 fuel vouchers and other items such as gift certificates and clothing.
