You never know what you’re going to get. Forrest Gump’s mama was right, as the universe has recently shown me once again. Four months ago, I helped publish what I thought would be my last issue of the Valley Journal. Boy, was I wrong.
After a summer packed with adventures, from catching, cleaning and cooking my first Montana trout over a campfire to countless float trips on local rivers — there were some misadventures, too, like the time I popped a tire high in the hills above Camas Prairie, forcing a friend to hike nearly four miles through bear-infested territory at dusk — I couldn’t be more in love with this beautiful place I have learned to call home. So when Summer Goddard mentioned she might be ready to hand over the reins as editor of the Journal, I jumped at the chance to stay in the area.
I’m convinced there’s no better place to practice community journalism than right here in Lake County. I’m always amazed at the variety and depth of stories that can be found among residents of our valley. Big-city dailies might not appreciate the coverage we give to school board meetings, community fundraisers and local legends, but the truth is, those topics are just as important as any major scandals that erupt in our government. We need fair, truthful reporting on every level of society to keep our officials honest and our freedoms intact. That’s why as editor of the Valley Journal, I can assure you I’ll do my very best to ensure that everything we print — from the community calendar to investigative reports — is accurate.
As your homegrown newspaper, the Journal is not only a record of life in the Mission Valley, but a beacon meant to shed light in all the corners of our community, no matter how dark. And to be successful, we need your help. Every question, comment, critique and story idea our readers have is valuable, so please don’t hesitate to call or write with your concerns. Even better, stop by our office on Main Street in Ronan — we’d love to see you.
