Editor,
In Western Montana, we have an appreciation for our local communities, the families and individuals that build them, the schools that usher our children through childhood, the land and the wonderful things that grow on it, and everyone who works hard to maintain their integrity.
House Bill 471, or the Farm to School Bill, would provide competitive seed grants for Montana K-12 schools to help them serve Montana grown or produced food in school lunches. This bill would strengthen our communities in a variety of ways.
Firstly, it would be good for our kids. Currently, Montana schools have about $1 per day per kid to spend on food. The bill would provide a funding boost that would enable our food service directors to provide more fresh, Montana-made products in our schools and educate our students about nutrition and agriculture.
Secondly, it would be an economic boost to our local farmers, ranchers, and food processors. Schools would provide a large, stable market for Montana goods and would strengthen our small businesses.
And lastly, it would be good for our communities. It would keep money circulating in our local economies and strengthen bonds between farmers, ranchers, businesses and schools (and the children and families associated with them).
The Farm to School bill was just passed in the House Agriculture Committee by a vote of 13-4. This bill obviously has their support. It needs our support, too. It will now move to the House Appropriations Committee, which will decide if the bill is worthy of government funding. This is a wise investment for Montana. Please contact your representatives in the House Appropriations Committee if you agree. It is easy. Call (406) 444-4800 and leave a message anytime during regular business hours and encourage them to make this a priority for Montana children, farmers, ranchers, small businesses and communities.
Don’t forget to thank Rep. Greg Hertz for sponsoring this bill.
