POLSON — Ah, spring — a time when crocuses peek through last year’s grass, birds start nesting and high school seniors decide where or if to attend college.
Polson High School senior Mesa Starkey, a stellar runner, considered Montana State University, the University of Montana, the University of Puget Sound, the University of Oregon and Whitman before signing a letter of intent with MSU on March 29. Starkey will run track and cross-country for MSU-Bozeman women.
She started applying to colleges in the fall. On a recruiting trip to Bozeman, she “liked the vibe of the girls team. Coach Dale Kennedy was just so enthusiastic,” Starkey said.
She admits that the increased amount of sunshine in Bozeman appealed to her and was a downside for Puget Sound.
“My mom is really happy I’m staying in-state,” she added. “I like the idea (of being in state) but being far away enough to be on my own.”
Both Starkey’s parents attended the University of Montana so it will be hard for them to adjust to a Bobcat daughter.
Starkey plans to study international relations in school as well as continuing writing and journalism.
