ST. IGNATIUS — A new face took over the reins of the Mission Police Department Monday, Mayor Charley Gariepy said. John Parker, of Dillingham, Alaska, was recently hired as full-time police chief. The department now has two full-time officers.
Acting police chief Tony Buff and officer Scott Sciaretta resigned in late January, leaving the town’s police department in yet another tight spot after years of ongoing difficulty keeping officers employed. Sciaretta had been on paid administrative leave for several months pending an investigation by the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation, which was investigating a non-performance-related issue involving Sciaretta. Following his and Buff’s resignations, the town immediately began searching for new police officers.
