Editor,

Several people in many of the voting districts advised The People’s Voice Inc. that tribal employees were forced to sign a document that they would not sign the two petitions concerning a referendum vote and a proposed amendment to the CSKT Constitution to add a recall provision. We have notified the civil rights division of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. We were informed that any supervisor who knowingly infringes on their employee’s civil rights is subject to investigation, a fine, imprisonment, or both, and possible termination from his/her position.

Remember, the reservation is federal land, and subject to all federal laws, regardless of tribal status. As a resident of the reservation, you are also a U.S. citizen and, therefore, covered under the Bill of Rights, which are the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution.  Your Tribal Council representative takes an oath of office to uphold the laws of the U.S. Constitution when he is first instated. Anyone who feels that his or her civil rights have been infringed upon, please call Jeri Roullier at (406) 745-0110.
