Editor,
The people of the Flathead Reservation have power within their voices that should not be overlooked. The treaties made, signed and sealed many years ago should stand strong as every day comes and goes. The people should not have to fight for their rights, especially against our own people we put on the Tribal Council. It should not matter who is wrong and who is right. Eloise Cobell stood for every Native American on every reservation in the United States until her end, and that is powerful. The people of the Flathead Reservation standing up for their right to what is theirs does not make them any less. Racism has been here for many years; it will never sleep.
The people want this goal to happen; $10,000 is nothing to compare to some salaries (all you know who you are). And $400 three times a year is nothing to the cost of living. So survival throughout the year depends on this measly sum from supposedly one of the richest tribes. The Hellgate Treaty should not be discredited or looked at as just another piece of paper to try to change it in court, and I ask the disgraced 1/4-Indians, did you get your $10,000? Indians are not drunks or beggars. All of us are the same color when it comes to alcohol and drugs, and not every Native American’s skin color gets them job positions, into school or other programs. The people voicing their opinions does not make them less than someone who is disgruntled and saying bad things against the people (tribal members). As you see, we all pray to the same God no matter what religion you believe in.
I thank all who read the Valley Journal.
