Editor,

All Ronan water customers recently received a copy of a public notice that the Department of Environmental Quality requires the City of Ronan to issue to its waters users.

The notice originates solely from a Montana DEQ regulation. The notice in no way indicates that any real public health or safety issues exist with Ronan drinking water; it is the same sweet water the city has provided for more than 100 years. The notice is merely the obligation of all surface-water-fed systems. New regulations designed to capture all surface-water-fed systems require a specialized water treatment the city neither has or needs at present, to ensure a safe drinking water supply. The city has appealed the necessity for this notice and is otherwise taking steps to comply with the regulation if it is upheld.

Please be advised that the drinking water in the City of Ronan is treated as necessary to ensure a supply well within safe drinking standards.

Kim Aipperspach
Mayor, City of Ronan
