RONAN — 4-H club members and their parents converged on the scale and stockyards to weigh in their 2010-2011 4-H steers on the morning of Jan. 8. Longhaired and fuzzy in their winter coats, some of the steers took a ride in a trailer or truck and a different environment in stride, while others dragged their owners down the alleys at the stockyards.
Montana State University county agent Jack Stivers and his volunteer crew of Jodi Bergh, Beth Blevins, Craig Blevins, Paul Guenzler, Tim Herried and Dusty Smith and others braved the cold weather and ice to weigh the steers and tattoo their ears. The green tattoos are checked when the steers come to the Lake County Fair in August to make sure 4-Hers bring the same steer.
About 32 steers were expected at the weigh-in, and they tipped the scales at 940 pounds for the heaviest and 640 pounds for the lightest.
Now 4-H club members can concentrate on pouring the feed to their calves and putting the finishing touches on halter breaking them in preparation for the fair.
