It was a tough week for Ronan’s basketball teams as the Chiefs and Maidens both opened conference play with a pair of losses.

The Chiefs had three players score in double figures against the Pirates at Polson Friday but it was not enough as Polson came away with a 74-61 win. Justin Dustybull scored 15, Lucas Black added 14 and Kevin Wroblewski had 10 but they were unable to overcome the Pirates.

Ronan was able to grab a quick 8-4 lead in the opening quarter before the Pirates used a quick 5-0 spurt to take a 9-8 advantage. The Pirates continued to add to their lead in the final minutes of the opening quarter and Polson led 17-10 after eight minutes of play.

Ronan used a 6-0 run to cut the Polson lead 20-16 in the opening minutes of the second quarter but the Pirates answered with a run of their own to grab a 37-27 halftime lead.

Polson pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Ronan 25-13 but the Chiefs were not done fighting. Down 27 in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs were able to use defense to help get some quick baskets to cut into the Polson lead and prompt the return of the Pirate starters. The run was not enough to erase the lead, though, as Polson picked up the win.

It was the fourth quarter that did the Chiefs in on the road Saturday as they fell to Libby, 46-44.

The teams fought to a 27-27 tie after two quarters of play. Ronan was able to win the third-quarter battle to grab a 42-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Libby was able to shut down the Ronan offense in the fourth quarter as the Loggers used a 7-2 run over the final eight minutes to down the Chiefs, 46-44.

J.J. Tanner led the Chiefs with 15 points in the loss.

The Maidens made a strong showing against the Lady Pirates Friday night, scoring the most points the team has put up in several seasons in a 69-44 loss.

Ronan was able to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening quarter before Polson came back to lead 17-10 after eight minutes of play. The Maidens were able to keep pace with the Lady Pirates in the second frame as Polson outscored Ronan by only three to lead 36-22 at halftime.

Polson was able to outscore the Maidens 33-22 in the second half to get the win.

Alice Van Gunten led the Maidens with 11 points and four rebounds in the loss while Tailyr Irvine added 10 points. Ashley Grandchamp chipped in with seven points, Justice Burland and Mariah Cheff each scored six, and Courtney Clairmont added four points.

The Lady Loggers were too much for the Maidens to handle at Libby Saturday as Ronan fell, 42-21.

Libby built all the lead they would need in the opening quarter as the Lady Loggers went up 20-2 after eight minutes of play. Ronan was able to outscore the Lady Loggers in the second half but could not close the deficit as Libby picked up the win.

Irvine led the Maidens with eight points in the loss while Grandchamp added seven and Clairmont, Van Gunten, and Cheff each scored two.

The Maidens will host Columbia Falls Friday while the Chiefs will take on the Wildcats on the road. Both teams will be at home Saturday as they take on Bigfork.
