Editor,
The power is with the people (tribal members), not with the people in power. Our tribal constitution and bylaws give us certain rights. Article VII Bill of Rights, Section 3, states all members of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes may enjoy without hindrance freedom of worship, speech, press and assembly.
It makes me wonder why it’s so hard to get a letter to the editor printed in our Char-Koosta News. I’ve suggested to the editor that they could use a disclaimer clause above the letters to the editor section that states any opinions or ideas presented in the letters are not necessarily those of the tribe or newspaper. This would give us our freedom of press we’re entitled to.
