KALISPELL — The Kalispell Invitational/David M. Hashley Drama Tournament drew 34 speech, debate and drama teams from across Montana encompassing Class AA, A, B and C schools. The two-day tournament took place on Nov. 19 and 20.
The Polson High School drama competitors placed fourth in overall Class A team placing, or sweeps as it is known informally, and also fourth in the speech and debate sweeps, quite an accomplishment at such a big meet.
PHS students who placed in finals in the drama events were:
Delaney Kohler and Jerry Wachal, 4th Humorous Duo Acting
Nation Garza and Krysta Seville, 6th, in Humorous Duo Acting
James Larson and Zach Calhoun, 7th in Humorous Duo Acting
Laura Barta and Sydney Gambrel, 2nd in Classical Duo: Acting
Isak Petersen and Jarrod Plant, 5th in Classical Duo Acting
Eryn McGinnis, 7th in Serious Solo Acting
Larissa Hanson, 6th in Pantomime
In speech and debate events, Kelsey Koberg and Logan Nutzman earned 7th place in Policy Debate while Erick DeLay and Reed Hovenkotter pulled down 6th in Novice Policy Debate.
While PHS fields a big speech, debate and drama team, head coach Jon Petersen said one team goal is “to increase the number of students on the team.”
“In particular,” Petersen said, “We would like to have more students competing in speech events. Our hope is to put together a strong speech team to be competitive with the top Class A programs in the state.
Petersen’s assistant coaches are Melissa Martin, Bonnie Petersen and Michael Schwabenbauer.
The next competition for the PHS team is a two-day meet in Corvallis on Dec. 3 and 4.
