With the first snow hitting the Mission Valley, people might need a new snow shovel to move the fluffy white stuff off the sidewalks and deck.

According to Gary Granley from Hanson and Granley True Value Hardware, their best-seller over the weekend was a shovel that’s a scoop and a pusher combined. Granley said it has a reinforced plastic edge so it can be used on decks and can also be used to chip ice. That shovel sells for $16.99. Granley also said the store is out of several shovels, but they’re expecting a truck with reinforcements.

Snow also brought shoppers into the store to load up on ice melt, Granley said.

Jim Allen went a little further than a snow shovel and was using his pickup-mounted snowplow to clean off parking lots and other areas around town.

But hand shovelers should warm up inside before they go outside to shovel snow. If at all possible, just push the snow in a straight line and then shovel it into a pile. Twisting and throwing snow is harder on backs. Of course, staying in shape all year round will make snow removal easier.

Take breaks when shoveling especially if the snow is deep or very wet and heavy.
