Editor,

I work as an advocate at SAFE Harbor, the only domestic violence and sexual assault safehouse in Lake County. Due to several federal grant budget cuts, the staff and board members of SAFE Harbor accepted the challenge of initiating several small fundraisers. With the assistance of the Mission Valley Players Association, Rick and Vicki Wheeler at the Club Bar, Julie and Willard from Willards, Roger and Kathy Starkel, and all of the other community members and merchants, the first ever SAFE Harbor Benefit Pool Tournament took place on Saturday, April 12.

With bated breath, I had been looking forward to the SAFE Harbor Benefit Pool Tournament held that fateful Saturday afternoon. After the clock had struck 1 p.m. and the tournament officially began, I allowed my gaze to wander around the room for a few seconds, shocked and amazed at the sight before me. A deep sense of pride, gratitude and community swelled within my heart and I was humbled to realize how many wonderfully supportive people surrounded me. With a grand total of 48 pool players to have attended the tournament, a fantastic turnout for a first year event of this sort, I am still fumbling for words. For now, the most I can do is write this letter with the hope of returning a fraction of the love and generosity to all of the people that made this event possible. This event would not have happened if not for all of them, so from my heart to the many fantastic supporters out there, I say thank you.
