CHARLO — Though many of the evening’s songs were about the dubiousness of love, there was no doubt about the audience’s feeling toward star-studded performers at the Charlo’s annual Talent Show.

Each of the 28 students who performed smashing hits like Katy Perry’s “Hot N’ Cold” and Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” received ample applause as well as hoots and hollers.

The event was organized by Charlo drama teacher Keith Grebetz with the help of Charlo senior Spencer Shafter.

Three years after the initial talent show, Grebetz explained that the organization is only getting easier because of Shafter’s role in the production.

“Unfortunately, he’s a senior, and my life is going to (get busy) next year,” Grebetz said.

Though Grebetz will certainly miss Shafter’s role in the orchestration of the event, there’s enough talent in Charlo to entertain years to come.

Humorous duo Chico Stipe and Royelle Esterby served as the event’s announcers, cracking jokes in between acts. The pair were clad in country-western attire and seemed at ease in the Charlo gymnasium.

“I just love that he gets on stage,” Grebetz said of high school student Garret Herron.

A natural performer, Herron sang a hilarious rendition of “The Farmer’s Daughter” dedicated to a certain somebody in the crowd. He was cued on by Shafter from his seat amongst the judges directly in front of the stage.

Exchange student Azharra Al-Farid beautifully performed the Taylor Swift song, “Love Story.”

Some of the other highlights of the evening included dances by some of the younger students. Hailey Weible, Aynslee McNeel and Kindra Kirsch danced about the stage to the tune of Boot Scootin’ Boogie.

The judges for the event included Kristi Grebetz, Troy Truman, Brenda Siech and Tanya Truman. The foursome elected Alyssa Little and Kyla Kirsch as winners of the K-9 category. The duo won the category with “Leave the Pieces.”

After debating between a sultry rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” performed by Michael Smith, Jorri Cates and Gvantsa Gatenadze and Shafter’s soulful “Walking in Memphis,” the judges gave first place to Shafter and left second place for Lady Gaga and his choreographed dance crew in the 9-12 grade category.

The show drew a crowd of over 200 people, Grebetz said. And with the help of a bake sale sponsored by the Charlo Parent Teacher Association and donations, the sophomore class raised $700 for their senior class trip.

The sophomore class is comprised of 14 students and has tentative plans to go to Florida after their graduation in 2013.
