RONAN — Several former high school wrestlers from around the area were back in town Thusday as the Ronan Event Center hosted Montana State University Northern’s Maroon vs Gold intersquad exhibition.
Ronan’s Cameron Neiss and Micky Cheff as well as Charlo’s Jame Petersen and Mission’s Travis Dumont were among the participants as the Gold squad earned a 21-17 win over the Maroon team.
According to Ronan High School wrestling coach Dustyn Azure, the event was a great opportunity for both the returning wrestlers and his younger athletes.
“It’s good for those boys to come home and get to wrestle on their home mats again. It’s also really good for the community to see how they are doing,” Azure said. “Seeing these hometown wrestlers shows the younger wrestlers that they can have a future in the sport. It shows them that you can earn a scholarship for wrestling and that all of their hard work can pay off.”
More than 150 spectators were in attendance for the event as the teams did battle.
“They have been wrestling for about a month over there, so these kids kind of know each other’s techniques and moves. It made for some close matches that were fun to watch,” Azure said.
Neiss was able to pick up a win by pin in his matchup against Derek Rogers of Simms, pinning Rogers in 4:59. Cheff came up short in his matchup, falling to Bozeman’s Tay Todd by a 7-0 decision. Peterson fell to Anthony Weerheim of Preston, Indiana by 6-3 decision. Dumont was pinned by Cody Miller, from Deer Park Wash., in 2:42.
According to Azure, the night was very successful and he hopes it will become an annual event.
“We are hoping to do this again in the future and make it a tradition,” he said. “It would be great to get another team or teams to come in so we don’t just have to watch these same kids beating up on each other every year.”
