CHARLO –Charlo Schools will be receiving a much needed update of math textbooks for the upcoming year. The new series of math books will cover grades K-12 without any gaps to replace outdated versions and bridge gaps in subject matter.
“This is our first time to do this,” Charlo elementary principal Clair Rasmussen said. “The books haven’t matched up in the past."
“We need to do a rotation in our textbooks,” Jenkins added. “We’re way overdue.”
Charlo School trustees also reviewed bids from three private contractors to pave the south-side parking lot along with the sidewalk near their shop building during their last regularly scheduled meeting.
After reviewing the numbers, trustees agreed to hold a special meeting on June 28 at 7 p.m. to make a decision.
In other business, Charlo superintendent Paul Jenkins gave a brief overview of the school’s finance situation. According to Jenkins, they have received preliminary numbers for Federal funding, but none of the figures have been made official. The current numbers put the school’s funding at $155,000, which is down approximately $10,000 from last year.
Jenkins believes the school’s streamlined budget will allow a remainder of $40,000 for the upcoming year, but to be safe he says it’s best not to commit to anything final just yet.
“With the remaining money we could possibly bring back a paraprofessional or two,” Jenkins said. “We will see what our needs are.”
One major necessity according to Charlo High School principal Steve Love is to bring back a second school secretary.
“They are the face of the school all day,” Love said. “They answer calls and meet people, it’s too much for one person.”
Following school budget discussion, trustees approved a technology equipment surplus sale, which will help the school get rid of unneeded equipment. The sale will be held July 7 in the cafeteria.
The board will hold a special meeting on June 28 to approve the bids for construction, and will meet again on July 19 for their next regularly scheduled meeting.
