Editor,

It is sad to hear, read and see all the anger and personal attacks being leveled by people against people in this election season. All in the name of politics. And it cuts all ways, regardless of party affiliations.

Looking deeply at the root causes of this anger, one can see exactly where it is coming from. It is coming from all of us waking up to the realization how far our national politicians have strayed from honesty, integrity, and putting America’s future ahead of personal power and re-election concerns. The sad thing is that rather than addressing the root causes of this anger, our politicians and the American public in general choose sides based upon their labeled identity and continue blasting away at the those with different labels and beliefs.

While the root causes may be simple to identify, they are not so simple to correct.   And this is exactly why our nation continues to slip and slide down one slippery slope after another, whether it be our banking system, our housing market, the economy, our infrastructure, our educational and health care systems or the social fabric of this nation.

On Saturday evening, Oct. 15, I attended Safe Harbor’s Sixth Annual Benefit Art Auction at the Ronan Community Center. The place was alive with enthusiasm and generosity. The large hall was filled with round tables for nine, all people supporting the Safe Harbor work on behalf of those dealing with issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

This strong local community activity is a perfect example, in my opinion, of the attitudes and actions necessary to once again raise this nation to a level of freedom, integrity, honesty, compassion and cooperation.

Change comes from the ground up, not from the top down. Those who are elected into office in the upcoming elections, whether they be local, state or national positions, each have the opportunity to work toward healing our nation or simply continue with bickering, finger pointing, and other divisive attitudes. That choice is theirs. We too, the voting public, have a choice as we look at the backgrounds, the attitudes, and the personal characteristics of those for whom we vote.

America needs each of us to take this freedom, this opportunity, seriously.
