Editor,
The recent and yet another debacle in Polson’s costly efforts to establish a city manager form of government would almost be funny if it wasn’t so costly, and brings to mind several quips. “Taxation without representation is tyranny” seems to go on in all levels of government and seems to be prevalent here.
“Third time’s a charm” might work if it wasn’t that both past efforts got us charmers who “by hook or crook” further depleted the city coffers.
Watching our governments at work reminds me of a not funny cartoon where a committee is discussing a problem. The CEO says, “at the count of three, let’s all throw money at it.” But that is our money folks, and for the most part is not buying us better roads or updated sewer plants, or services. And when you entitlement people vote in another benefactor, ask if he is “robbing Peter to pay Paul.” That is like “killing the goose that lays the golden eggs” and maybe Peter is getting “plum petered out” and decides to quit, and lay off his workers rather than cope with endless government rules and increased taxes. “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
When I spoke with a city councilman more than a year ago and suggested that a retired person with the best interest of Polson at heart — rather than his pocketbook — would be happy to be a “sidewalk superintendent” and give “updates” as a volunteer, I was told, “You need to pay big salaries to get a good person.”
Well, “it hasn’t worked yet.”
I’m about quipped out, or “the well’s about dry” and “taxed to the max,” so I will thank you for your time.
Gil Mangels
