POLSON — After swearing in new Polson School Board Trustee Caroline McDonald at the monthly meeting on June 10, the board continued working its way through the policy manual.

In a special board meeting before the regular meeting, the trustees approved the contract with Swank Construction for work on Polson High School, including replacing the roof, facia and soffits, exterior building energy upgrades and replacing the ventilatio system. Swank will begin accepting bids for the roof portion of the project.

During the regular meeting, trustees also approved two resolutions, one the sale of the bonds and one for approving tax compliance procedures relating to tax-exempt bonds. Voters approved the 10-year debt service bond of $2,491,000 in February.

Superintendent Linda Reksten commented on a workshop being held at Polson High School.

The workshop is part of Reksten’s plan for district staff to work together to shepherd kids from school to school and find a prescription for what those students need so they can graduate, she said.

The trustees approved purchase of Houghton Mifflin English and language arts curriculum titled “Journeys” for grades K-5 for a whopping $176,000 taken out of impact aid monies.

Reksten recommended the materials, noting this was the first adoption of an English and language arts curriculum the district has made in 13 years.

Tamara Fisher, the district’s gifted and talented teacher and a curriculum selection committee member,  noted that the choice was an administrative decision; not all the selection committee members agreed on “Journeys.”

Cherry Valley Principal Elaine Meeks and teachers Molly Billedeaux and Valerie Rogers presented information on the state of the district’s Indian Education for All Pathways.

In other business, trustees approved the district’s Alta Care contract, the Montana medical billing contract, hiring a family involvement coordinator, accepting out-of-district students, the early admittance of a kindergarten student and the personnel action reports.

The board also approved a boardsmanship workshop for themselves to be held at the historic Big Arm schoolhouse.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on July 8.
