Editor,

The July 13 Active Shooter disaster exercise held at Salish Kootenai College in Pablo was a testament to the professionalism and dedication of emergency personnel and educators in the Mission Valley. The exercise scenario was created by members of the Tribal Emergency Response Committee/Local Emergency Planning Committee to include disaster responders from all agencies; city, county, state, federal, and tribal representatives were part of the planning and response. From Red Cross shelters to Public Health clinics, the incident escalated to encompass law enforcement, Search and Rescue, fire personnel, volunteer and private ambulance companies, and local hospitals. Local volunteers from as far away as Missoula contributed to the success of the exercise as they carried off a realistic response posing as injured victims and their family members. SKC provided the buildings and location of the event, and Kicking Horse Job Corp supplied a wealth of enthusiastic volunteer “victims.” While State of Montana DPHHS funds helped to defray some costs, local responders supported the exercise by contribution of volunteer time, supplies, salaries, and vehicles. Lunches, water and T-shirts were supplied by St. Luke Community Healthcare and Providence St. Joseph Medical Center. This training exercise should assure our valley communities that local emergency providers are proactive and ready to serve. Thanks to all who participated.
