Editor,
There’s never been a question that the Lake County Sheriff’s Office needs a boat to perform their water born duties within Lake County (although, maybe the Coast Guard might be a better choice). There’s never been a question that summertime boaters are fully capable of creating a need for emergency service, time and time again. The question has been whether that same Sheriff’s office has any sense of frugality or financial responsibility to the taxpayers of Lake County. The secondary question is whether or not they have the appropriate training and sense of professional service to accompany their responsibilities.
Driving a boat or ship on the water is exhilarating and the deputy sheriffs perform that function with proven exuberance. Does that make them responsible, professional adults? Do they operate their boat/ship in a safe, professional manner? Have they already damaged their new, shiny boat/ship? Could all of their “high tech,” fancy hardware have been installed on their “old boat?” Could it be installed on any boat? So, are we to be lulled into a false sense of security — physical, financial, emotional?
I support law enforcement — it has its place in our society. When it acts irresponsibly or childishly, I draw the line. Have we forgotten the now infamous Deputy Sheriff Dan Duryee and his “conviction” for lying and acting without due regard for our safety? Have we swept under the rug the full support he received from elements of the Sheriff’s Office? Have we forgotten, “you can’t break the law if you are the law?”
