Editor,
Politics can define a community for better or worse. People hold their values close and want to protect what they believe to be important. Some places in the world seem to be forever challenged by differences rather than accepting diversity and embracing commonalities.
Over the last year, the Ronan community has been experiencing some of these challenges in various forms. It has come out in debates and meetings and on the streets. The healthy exchange of ideas can be a positive impetus for change. Individuals expressing their beliefs is a core ideal treasured in America. Along with this freedom is the concept of an open democratic process in which all people are heard, the actions of the government are transparent and elected officials listen to those they represent.
It makes me sad to see a community tearing at its core. I urge all involved to consider their choices and the impact it will have on the entire community. Step back and think about what really matters in the long run. Many wonderful ideas have been put forth for helping Ronan evolve and flourish. Some might be difficult to implement. Others might fail. Change can be difficult and yet, it can also be exciting. Let us all think creatively and seek solutions that build upon the resources we already have available.
I hope that the community can come together and put aside the personality conflicts and value differences to focus on the longterm vision for our little part of the world.
I challenge all those connected, whether directly or in the larger community, to take one simple action to help promote a more positive, collaborative and supportive environment. Go to a city council meeting and share an idea. Visit with neighbors to see what they think. Research the ideas being presented. Look for new revenue streams to help with the budget. Offer time or talent to help with the process. Imagine possibilities rather than obstacles.
Our actions define us and also set a model for the youth in this community. Sometimes we must let go in order to hold on.
