Editor,

Four years ago, on Aug. 23, the Polson Community and Lake County lost one of its “good guys,” and God took an amazing man home to Heaven. Chris Hoyt loved life, his family, and his close friends and brothers in blue (brown). He lived every day to the fullest, and was a man of support, encouragement, and character. Chris had a desire to help people, and influence the people whose lives he touched.

Chris loved being a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper. He saw his role as a Trooper as that of an educator; he even called the tickets that he wrote “educational coupons.” Chris knew that education increases choices in one’s life and open doors of opportunity.

Chris believed in having choices, and living a responsible life that allowed those choices to lead to increased opportunities for growth and success. This included not just the education he provided on the roads, but also education in the classroom.

To honor Chris’ memory, the family has created the Chris Hoyt Memorial Scholarship. We have joined forces with Polson Dollars for Scholars to provide a scholarship to a Polson High School graduate each year who desires to further their study in the areas of criminal justice, law, or public service.

As we approach the fourth anniversary of Chris’ “Heaven Date,” please consider a donation of any amount – one time or annually – to support the Chris Hoyt Memorial Scholarship, and to help Chris’ memory live on in the pursuit of choices, and opening those doors of opportunity.

A donation may be dropped by the Office of Bergh and DeVries, CPAs, or mailed to Dollars for Scholars, c/o Chris Strom, P.O. Box 741, Polson, MT 59860. For more information, you may contact chrishoytmemorialscholarship@gmail.com.
