POLSON — As the days got shorter and inched closer to the end of summer, while most kids were trying to squeeze every last minute of playtime in before heading back to the classroom, the Polson High School cross-country team was busy hitting the track.

Experienced returning upperclassman and a few new freshmen faces round out the team this year.

Last week’s time trials gave Head Coach Matt Seeley a baseline for his new runners while noted many improvements faster times in his returning athletes.

“Everyone ran really hard, and you can see that some kids had near perfect pacing as well as big improvements from last year.” Seeley said.

The girls had a great start with two seniors breaking a 13-year record of 20:53 in the three-mile run. Alisha Jore first broke the ice on Thursday with a time of 20:35, improving her time from last year by 2:10. Then Claudia Hewston broke the old record and Jore’s new one, logging an impressive 19:42 and chopping about a minute off her 2012 time. The top five girls all ran under 22 minutes, including freshman Isabella Seemann (20:52) and Anna Young (20:52).

Polson boys were led by senior Tel Motichka with an untouchable 17:45 minute 12-lap time. Cade Howlett, also a senior, dropped almost 90 seconds, finishing at 19:10. Standout improvement goes to junior Rylee Andrews. Andrews dropped his last year’s time by 3:09 minutes. Pirate sophomore Thunder Morales also showed improvement, slicing 2:24 minutes off his time to finish at 19:16.

“It is shaping up to be a great year for Pirate cross-country,” Seeley said.

Polson’s first Invitational will be Friday, Sept. 6 in Cut Bank.
