ST. IGNATIUS – The Ronan Maidens battled it out in their first match of the season against the Mission Lady Bulldogs and pulled out a conference win.

Nerves were shaky from a first set loss, but that didn’t deter the Maidens from taking home the victory as they went on to win the next three sets.

“We weren’t able to adapt to the different environment quick enough and they were able to take us out of our game,” head coach Adrienna DeCock said of game one. “We came back the second game more relaxed and served tough. From then on we were able to put our game together.”

Kendra Starkel led the team offensively with 11 kills.

“She had a kill at the 10-foot line at the end of the first to help get us started and completely changed the momentum of our game,” DeCock said.

On Saturday Ronan hosted three teams in a quad set of games.  Eureka, Bigfork, and Deer Lodge met the Maidens in Ronan.  Each team played two games.

The Maidens won the first game against the Eureka Lady Lions 23-25, 8-25, 25-15, 25-19, 16-14. The team had a combined 11 aces, 27 kills, 23 assists, and 12 digs in the contest.

Though valiantly putting up a fight the Maidens dropped the second game to the Bigfork Vals 21-25, 16-25, 25-16, 23-25. Kendra Starkel led the team in aces (5), Kills (11), and digs (9).  Christine Robinson put up 27 assists.

“Once the girls relaxed and started having fun we were a completely different team on the court.” DeCock said.  “We have a lot more to work on but overall I’m pleased with our performance.”
