It was another busy week for Polson's track teams as the Pirates and Lady Pirates were in action at a non-scoring meet at Big Sky in Missoula Tuesday and at the Last Chance Meet in Corvallis Thursday.
Both the boys and girls got a good workout at Big Sky Tuesday in a quadrangular meet that kept the athletes scrambling between events.
"We used this meet for a good conditioning workout and put the kids in a lot of events," coach Bob Gunderson said. "The meet was over in less than 3 hours so there wasn't much time to catch a breather between events."
Breanne Kelley had a good day for the Lady Pirates, winning a pair of events as she took first in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Anna DiGiallonardo also won an event for Polson as she took top honors in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.49 seconds. DiGiallonardo was also second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.07 seconds and third in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, eight inches.
Katharina Medland was second in the 400-meter run while Anne Venters was third. Medland was also second in the pole vault. Mesa Starkey finished second in the 1,600-meter run and fifth in the 800-meter event. Sierra Pete took fourth in the 800-meter run while Claudia Hewston was third in the 1,600-meter run.
D.J. Conko-Camel was second in the shot put and third in the discus while Jewel Zakit-Ackerman was fourth in the shot put. Shelby Korpi was fifth in the triple jump for the Lady Pirates.
MacKenzie Banner was third in the pole vault while Macall Banner was fifth.
The Lady Pirate 1,600-meter relay team of Pete, DiGiallonardo, Hewston and Kelley was second with a time of 4:25.85 while the 400-meter relay team of Katie Finley, Pete, Kelley and DiGiallonardo was second with a time of 53.19 seconds.
On the boys side of things, Travis Hays set a new personal record to win the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:10.
Clark Rubel also set a person record to win the discus with a toss of 126 feet, nine inches while Brock Bleazard won the pole vault by clearing 12 feet.
The Pirates also picked up a win in the 400-meter relay as the team of Paul McClurg, Mike Devlin, Eric Williamson and Vince DiGiallonardo finished with a time of 46.31 seconds.
Both teams were in action again in Corvallis Thursday as they competed in the Last Chance Meet (Last Chance referring to the last chance to qualify for this weekend's Russ Pilcher Top 10 meet in Missoula). Despite less than ideal conditions, both squads had strong showings.
"The meet was cold and windy but we managed to get through it with some pretty good efforts," Gunderson said.
Anna DiGiallonardo led the way to a second-place team finish for the Lady Pirates as she picked up 20 individual points and also ran on Polson's two relay teams, which both took second.
DiGiallonardo was second in the 100-meter dash with a season-best time of 12.93 second and was also second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.72 seconds. Anna was also fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, one and 1/4 inch.
Kelley also had a good day for the Lady Pirates, setting season best times to finish second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the 300-meter hurdles.
Starkey was the only individual event winner for the girls as she took the top spot in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:24.9.
The Pirates finished in fifth place at the meet with 60 team points as Rubel led the way with a first-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, one inch.
Polson also took third and sixth in the shot put as Dale Big Sam was third and Riley Sampson set a new person record with a toss of 41 feet, six inches to come in sixth.
Devlin was second in the 400-meter run with a personal-best time of 52.81 second while Chris Cote was third. Zion Lee was second in the pole vault and Drew Fouty took sixth and Vince DiGiallonardo set a new person record to finish sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.5 seconds.
Several Pirates and Lady Pirates will be in action at the Russ Pilcher Top 10 meet at Missoula Big Sky Tuesday. The event features athletes ranked in the top 10 in their events in western Montana.
Mesa Starkey will be running in the 3,200-meter (also qualified in the 1,600-meter but will not participate), Kelley will run the 100 and 300-meter hurdles as well as run on the 400 and 1,600-meter relay teams, Anna DiGiallonardo will run in the 100 and 200-meter dashes as well as the 400 and 1,600 meter relays, Hewston will run the 1,600-meter run and the 1,600-meter relay, Finley will run on the 400-meter relay and Pete will run the 400-meter relay and the 1,600-meter relay.
For the Pirates, Devlin will compete in the long jump, 400-meter run and 1,600-meter relay, while Cote, Lee and Hayes will all run on the 1,600-meter relay team.
The event begins at 3 p.m.
Both teams will also be in action at the A.R.M. Invitational in Whitefish Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
