Editor,

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly announce my candidacy for Lake County Sheriff in 2014. My political beliefs are that of the Republican Party. I hope to earn the top spot on their ticket during the June primary election.

As your game warden for 21 years, I clearly demonstrated my commitment to the people of Lake County. I never forgot whom I worked for. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks regulation enforcement is a very complicated vocation, especially in Polson.

Whether it be explaining why you couldn’t keep a bull trout to why it is not legal for a non-tribal member to hunt big game on their own land within the reservation boundary. The answer that was given was always prompt, concise and most importantly understandable. People knew that if anything came up concerning fish and game, they could always get an answer and a common sense resolution by calling Game Warden Rick Schoening.

After my retirement in 2007, I returned to law enforcement as a police officer for the City of Polson in 2011. I experience on every shift what it takes to be a problem-solver with people instead of wildlife and people. Some aspects are similar, most are not.

I understand and appreciate the occupation of peace officer. I have worn a badge with powers of arrest for 30 years. I have always been fair and reasonable with the way I enforce the laws that govern us all.

As your Sheriff, I will serve the citizens of Lake County in a way that is accountable and transparent; Demonstrate true leadership, accountability and restore the public’s faith in the dedicated employees/officers of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and continue to execute the oath of office I took many years ago. Most importantly — defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the constitutional rights of Lake County citizens.

I would appreciate your support. You can contact me at (406) 675-3002 or email rickschoening112@gmail.com
