Editor,

I would like to thank Michael Brandt and Heather Knutson for joining me in the campaign to be Polson’s next mayor. They are formidable opponents and sincere in their quest for the position. It is the first political campaign for each of us and I believe, that after observing city elections for the past 32 years, Polson is fortunate to have three individuals so enthusiastic to run.

For me it has been pleasant and rewarding to meet so many citizens concerned enough to ask questions and express their opinions about our city. Many question why controversies seem to dominate city government and others want to know what the role of the mayor is in a charter form of government.

I have answered a lot of the questions and explained my proposed approach to addressing the controversies. The mayor, with the commission, sets policy for the manager to implement. The mayor more than anything, has a responsibility to represent the city, conduct and set the tone at commission meetings, and interact with citizens much like the owner of a store represents his business. Michael, Heather and I all have management experience on our resumes but I have explained that the city has a paid manager to perform day to day management of the city enterprises.

The next mayor needs to possess “people skills” that will allow for serious, non-judgmental conversations with members of the public who are either satisfied or less than satisfied with city government. Michael worked in a retail environment for four years where he learned those skills. Heather, as a manager at Country Foods, has similar experience. Both Michael and I have started and successfully operated consulting businesses in Polson, an experience that quickly focuses attention on the obvious fact that dealing with a variety of clients in a pleasant and responsive way is the only avenue for future success.

I thank Michael and Heather for their participation in this campaign. The citizens of Polson can rest assured that the future of Polson will be a positive one.
