Editor,

Over the summer I had the opportunity to be an intern in the County Commissioners office. This was required to finish my political science degree, and I gained some insights I would like to share.

First, the commissioners: they actually work well together. Now don’t mistake me, all three of them have their own opinion of government, and these opinions don’t always match up. What I mean is that they can debate and argue a subject, and some of these get heated, but when the subject changes they forget all about it and move on. They don’t hold grudges or stay mad at each other. They will say they don’t like the outcome but they support democracy and that includes being the loyal minority.

The civility they maintain, the high regard they hold for each other regardless of what side of an issue they are on, is the best anyone could hope for in politics. Without it you can look at our national congress and see the outcome: gridlock and party line politics, which is tearing our country apart, without producing any good.  When you get people working together like our commissioners, you can see improvement; it’s government improvement, which means it is slow, but still improvement.

Second, community involvement: they want it. Republics and democracies run on community involvement, but very few people get involved. America has lost that sense of community, and sadly I think we here in Lake County are losing it too. The Commissioners have had me working on using various media sources to get information out and making what is already transparent actually understandable and easier to access.

There are some changes coming to the website and the County now has a Facebook page, which is in its trial phase. They are also looking at having a YouTube channel to help explain different policies and procedures. They want to get all this information out there to help increase public participation, because when the public gets involved proper government is gained.

Am I saying these Commissioners are perfect? No, but nobody is perfect.
