Editor,
September is National Recovery month.
What can we, as parents, do to help prevent our children from a future of addiction?
We can provide positive experiences for our children; ones that they can succeed at; ones that make them feel good about themselves.
We can communicate with our children. Find time in our busy day to focus only on what is going on in their life at that moment. We can stay open and try not to judge.
Be connected with our children’s teachers, friends, and friend’s parents. Make sure you know that your child is in a safe environment by knowing responsible parents are near.
Provide opportunities of service for your child. We all feel better when we do something good for others.
See yourself as a role model for your children.
If you drink alcohol, drink responsibly; don’t drink and drive. Addictions are hard to recover from, so let’s work together to provide our children all the tools to feel successful and to make the right choices.
From all of us at Western Montana Addiction Services, thank you for caring.
