RONAN — The good folks of Mountain West Co/Op of Ronan will be holding a fundraising basketball game for Coach Les Rice. Rice has been a rock for the Mission Lady Bulldogs basketball team as head coach for 34 years. He’s taken a step back and is now retiring from the game to focus on treatment he is receiving due to lung cancer.

Rice has also been a staple to the local farmers and ranchers of the valley, providing 15 years of service at Mountain West Co/Op as the “back end” manager, helping the valley’s residents with farm equipment and various other ranch needs.

The fundraising event will be held Sunday, Dec. 8 at Charlo High School and will start at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $2 for adults and $5 for a family. The basketball game will be played with Mountain West employees taking on local farmer and rancher volunteers with the Mountain West team boasting Les Rice as their “honorary coach.”

There will also be entertainment, raffles, giveaways, and games as well as provided daycare and children’s activities. All proceeds collected will go straight to Rice to “help with his battle.”

Marcy Gerdts is organizing the event and is adamant on how much each dollar brought in counts.

“Les has to drive to Missoula for his chemotherapy treatments,” she said. “Even if we can help him with gas, that helps.”

Those interested in participating or just wanting to “enjoy an evening of laughter,” stop by Mountain West Co/Op or contact Marcy Gerdts at (406) 529-3604.

“It should be a lot of fun,” Gerdts said.
