Babies start learning from the moment they are born. With that in mind, local educators from the Upsilon chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma have sponsored a “Books for Babies” project for several years. This group collaborated with St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson and St. Luke Hospital in Ronan to distribute approximately 240 book bags to families this year. Filled with books and informational materials, the bags provide early literacy information to parents, a child’s first teacher. A recent grant awarded to the Upsilon chapter from the DKG Educational Foundation will help this project grow.
In addition to funds from the national foundation, local businesses have made this project possible with their ongoing support. Total Screen Design has generously silk-screened hundreds of bright red book bags. WalMart has also donated materials; both area thrift stores and Hopa Mountain, an organization based in Bozeman, have contributed books.
The Upsilon chapter thanks the community for its help, especially the parents who from the beginning, open a book and turn the first page.
