Editor,

The major news networks said it again and again this past week “Nelson Mandella changed the world.” I didn’t know him personally, but what I read about him and heard about him in the past few days, impressed me to agree with the newscasters that he was certainly an unusually forgiving person. But did he really change the world? Is our world more forgiving because of his example?

At various times in human history there have been outstanding individuals who have significantly influenced for good a people or a country. In some cases the contribution from their life has had a very profound, life-altering effect on multitudes of people. The names of several well-known and honored individuals were suggested as comparable examples to the remarkable accomplishments of the deceased president of South Africa. I sincerely hope that the lesson on forgiveness which he modeled will not be soon forgotten by any of us.

There is one Man, whose birthday we’ll celebrate in a few days, who, by his birth, death and resurrection truly and significantly changed the lives of people in his generation and in every subsequent generation. Not just in his small corner of the world, but in every corner of the world. It’s more than two thousand years since his historical birth, yet, his name is spoken by millions of people every day on every continent, and perhaps in every country on earth. His name is Lord Jesus Christ. No one, without exception, has changed lives, governments and human history as he has. He is truly the world changer. However, you won’t hear that on the major news networks.

Let’s talk about Jesus as we enjoy our happy family times this Christmas. After all, he is the reason for this birthday celebration.
