Redirecting attention is a trick

Editor,
Smear tactics to stifle freedom of speech tell a lot about the makeup of a community. When “lack of longevity” is used as a primary disqualification for someone having an opinion on something, someone else is feeling a bit uneasy. Maybe the truth really does hurt and you know we all want to avoid pain.
When we ignore our constitutional right to free speech by denying it to someone else, we expose our personal moral weaknesses. When we shoot the messenger instead of the message, we expose our bias and predisposition to racial profiling.
When we ourselves are racist and cover it up by pointing fingers at our opposition and falsely brand them as such, we are playing by the Saul Alinsky Rules of Socialism. Do you really think it will go unnoticed?
When we cannot accept our own moral bankruptcy and find it difficult to live with ourselves, we redirect everyone’s attention to someone else; “nothing to see here, move along, hey, look over there.”
Take a closer look at our local water war and see if you can’t identify those who are delivering a message with facts and truth and those who are shooting the messenger because they have no other means to defend their position that is void of concrete, truthful facts and is actually composed of lies and deceit. A magician’s trick; look over there, not here.
