Editor,
The misnamed Arts and Entertainment network is faced with a conundrum: continue to dumb down America’s puerile puritans with programming like “Duck Dynasty” or provide something more befitting their name. A low bar since even “Hoarders” would be higher brow. They have devolved way beneath their original aspiration of showcasing “Arts” while their notion of “Entertainment” has sunk to the level of bringing the basest possible form of debauchery to the highest integer of imbeciles.
“Duck Dynasty” demonstrates the antithesis of “Arts” and how debasing “Entertainment” can be (although the WWE has already been there, done that.) After suspending Robertson, will A&E, like Cracker Barrel, crack under the pressure of prodigious ignoramus hysteria, or will they stand their ground and stick to their guns?
Is A&E proud to present the buffoonery and braggadocio of Phil Robertson’s bible thumping? Do they choreograph his finger-waving or condone his bellicose proclamations that those who do not behave and believe likewise are doomed to eternal damnation? If they had a shred of self-respect, they’d collapse under sempiternal humiliation each time this atrocity is aired for mass consumption. To broadcast such unadulterated quackery belies any sense of decency.
I denounce Robertson’s unrepentant racism, repugnant bigotry, and sacerdotal sexism which colors blacks as cheerful supplicants, paints women comparable to dogs, and claims that it’s godly to revile gay people even before God Himself resolves to consign them to the depths of hell. These philosophies, while acceptable by the standards of brutes, inbred hillbillies and dipsomaniacs, are intolerable to a civilized, contemporary citizenry.
