Editor,

I have been here for several years and have been very surprised at the way some are treated here on the Reservation. They are called a slanderous name – descendant – to me that is like being called Negro, Irish scum and dago.

I find this very upsetting. I never thought of it that way until speaking with my husband, who is a descendant. He is given no rights, much like the Southern slaves, who were of mixed blood, or the Irish of the 1700s and 1800s, who need not apply for work because they were Irish.

Very sad, not just whites teach hate. I say to all descendants, hold your head high, the blood of your great ancestors still flows through your veins. Your genetic markers still say “Native.” Be proud, hold your head high.

You are worthy, not a mutt or half-breed. You are beautiful and great in your own race, the human race.

Hold your heads high. Do not be made to feel like less of a person. You are still from a proud race.

After all they are also your relatives and mine. Please stop racial segregation. Love one another, for we are all human.
