The Lake County Sheriff’s Office transferred an investigation involving the alleged embezzlement of $675,000 from Whitefish Credit Union and a missing person to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Lake County Detective Dan Yonkin confirmed on Tuesday.
He also indicated that authorities have made contact with Kathleen Gratton Sammons. She is no longer considered a missing person, nor is there a warrant out for her arrest, Yonkin explained.
The Lake County Attorney’s Office filed a criminal affidavit after auditors found approximately $675,000 missing from the credit union’s vault on June 24. On the same day Sammons, who worked as vice president at the credit union, left at 8:30 a.m. She didn’t return phone calls throughout the day and missed an appointment at noon.
Authorities were led to a vacant home outside of Pablo, where they located Sammons’ car containing her purse, identification and 11 credit cards.
The sheriff’s office retracted the missing person investigation on June 29 after Sammons had contacted her family several times.
Later that week, Sammons made contact with authorities, Yonkin explained.
He confirmed that the criminal affidavit has been dismissed without prejudice, which gives authorities time to develop a thorough investigation.
