Donald Curtis Siers

COLUMBIA FALLS — Donald Curtis Siers, 92, passed away on Jan. 14 at the Montana Veterans’ Home in Columbia Falls, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family.

Don was born May 1, 1921, on a farm in Wadena County, Minn., to Harry and Anna Reece Siers. He was the oldest of five brothers and five sisters.

He was drafted into WWII in 1942 and served under General Patton earning five bronze stars, from five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. Don was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal for his service before he was honorably discharged in 1945.

On Dec. 15, 1952, Don married Joyce Newland in Olyen, Minn., and in 2013 they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

Don worked in the logging industry nearly all his working life; most of the time as a sawyer. This work eventually took him to Dixon, where he and Joyce lived for 35 years. They made many civic contributions in Dixon, particularly enjoying their work with the Dixon Senior Center.

Don was an expert pinochle player and loved to tell jokes and always had one or two handy.

Don’s wife Joyce, his four daughters, Beverly Siers, Sheila Quimby (Bucky), Mary Rackham (Bill) and Janet Schwegel (Greg); numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great great-grandsons; his four sisters, Pearl, Norma, Evelyn and Ruth; and his two brothers, Wayne and Dale, all of Minnesota, survive him. Don’s sister Fern; his brothers Willis, Harry and Ross; and his grandson Teddy, preceded him in death.

Funeral services have been held. Burial took place at the Montana Veterans Home Cemetery with full military honors.
