Editor,

New Jersey politics, Chris Christie, Keystone Pipeline, Syria, Iran, same-sex marriage, minimum wage, immigration, abortion, and Obamacare. From my point of view, what do these issues all have in common and why?

What they all have in common is that they each are popular news items being endlessly debated from all angles and are growing in public and political concern rather than fading away.

The “why” is the most interesting and valuable aspect as we attempt to move forward as a nation and advance our standing and influence throughout the world.

Here is why I see it this way. Each of these subjects is addressing things that heretofore have often been covered up, considered off-limits, are legislatively too difficult to address and therefore not brought to the level of actually changing legislation. This is forcing both “we the people” and our elected legislators to consider adjusting to policies and laws which run counter to certain moral, political, religious, or ethnic beliefs.

To me, this seems healthy for America because things are “out on the table,” are being thoroughly discussed by all sides, are getting close scrutiny, and leading toward consensus, growth, healthy life styles, and most importantly an America functioning on a foundation of honesty, strength, courage, and forward thinking leadership.

Now, if at the same time, we can actually be politically guided by “the will of the people” rather than “big money interests,” we will truly be the democracy we claim to be.
