An inexperienced Polson Laker team with little playing time together was able to come together to finish fourth at the 2010 Splash Classic.

With a mixture of seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders on the team and only four practices before the tournament, the fourth-place finish exceeded the expectations of their coach Tom Kenney, who said he was thrilled with how his team played and expects them to get better with each tournament. The U14 team will be in Great Falls this weekend.

The Lakers went 2-1 in pool play to earn the second seed when bracket play started Sunday. The Lakers started Sunday by blanking the Ronan Outlaws 9-0.

“That was our best game of the tournament. Even though we won two games in pool play, that was our cleanest game on defense,” Kenney said.

Jaylin Kenney picked up the win for the Lakers. She struck out four and allowed only two hits.

The Lakers scored three runs in their half of the third. Jessica Bagnell started the rally by drawing a walk and Sidney Brackey and Chelsea Chowning and Jaiden Toth followed with singles.

The Lakers put the game out of reach with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by Bagnell’s two-run triple. Jordyn Evertz and Kenney singled and scored in the inning.

The Lakers followed their best game of their tournament with probably their worst game of the tournament, losing 16-2 to the Bitterroot Sparks in the semifinals. Kenney said his team just kind of fell apart in the semifinals and defensive miscues cost his team any chance of playing in the championship game.

The Lakers never could match the way they played against Ronan to start the day, but despite not playing their best they had a chance to beat the Columbia Falls Clash in the third/fourth-place game.

Kenney said the heat may of been a factor, but thinks it was more of his team just not playing together long enough.

In the 7-6 loss to end the tournament, the Lakers had a tying run on third base with no outs in the final inning, but couldn’t push the run across the plate. Brackey, Chowning and Toth all singled and scored in the second to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. The Clash retook the lead with a four-run third. After a Clash insurance run in the fifth, the Lakers rally in their last at-bats fell one run short. Bailey Roberts, who Kenney said was a great surprise at the tournament, had her third double of the tournament and scored the Lakers final run during the rally.
